Imagine that Deep Purple and Sly and the Family Stone had a love child that grew up in New Orleans listening to Ray Charles, Black Sabbath and Booker T. That love child would be the Sugar Free Allstars. With their diverse musical influences and unusual instrumentation, this funky organ/drum duo from Oklahoma City can be hard to classify. The music blends New Orleans funk, Memphis soul and Hammond organ-drenched gospel, wrapped in a colorful rock and roll package. Add to the mix a touch of pop songwriting sensibilities, humor and a high-energy live show and you’ve got the Sugar Free Allstars.
The rock solid grooves on “All on a Sunday Afternoon” pay a deep tribute to America’s great musical heritage, particularly the golden eras of Motown and Stax Records. As a bonus, the music package includes a CD and full-length concert DVD.
People always laugh at us when we write about Ease of Use for a kids album – but you better believe that this is a category that must be addressed! When kids like the music – it is easy to get them to listen to it. When parents dig the music too we are talking about fun car rides for everyone. And when it comes to Sugar Free Allstars – our parents were as into it as the kids were! Thus…this CD is certainly Easy to Use!
With a CD designed for kids ages 4 to 9 – you really aren’t going to have any major durability issues. The occasional fingerprint may need to be wiped away, but other than that – no real worries.
So…we know that times can be tough for musicians and artists making their way in the world – and without trying to sound insincere or condescending, we can definitely empathize. The problem is – this CD is priced at $17.50. Yes, there is a bonus DVD, but if we want the CD we would make the purchase without the DVD – so that shouldn’t come into the cost factor. And…we’re talking kids music. Lots of parents out there don’t like to spend more than 10 bucks on an album for ourselves, spending nearly double that on a kids album is tough to swallow.
Pricing points aside – Sugar Free Allstars rock! Fun and funky – hip and hilarious. We love the tunes – all original – and all awesome!
Bottom line, the only drawback we found to All on a Sunday Afternoon was the pricing. If you can handle that – you are going to be thrilled with the purchase. The funky bass line, rhythmic melodies, and fun subject matter are all things that your children and you will love. All on a Sunday Afternoon is a fantastic addition to your children’s music rotation – and one that you’ll enjoy listening to as well!
