Randy Kaplan is a nationally acclaimed artist that Time Out New York Kids magazine recently names as one of the top children’s performers in the nation. More than two years in the making, Mr. Diddie Wah Diddie includes 17 songs first performed by the likes of legendary blues musicians Robert Johnson, Blind Blake, Blind Boy Fuller, Jimmie Rodgers, Sonny Boy Williamson, Bessie Smith, Muddy Waters, Mance Lipscomb, Pink Anderson, Mississippi John Hurt, Hambone Willie Newbern, the Reverend Gary Davis, Blind Willie Johnson, Dave Van Ronk, Jim Jackson and Charlie Patton.
Most albums that we come across are easy for us to categorize in Ease of Use. Yet something about Mr. Diddie Wah Diddie was a bit polarizing for some of our kids. Some took to the awesome, soulful blues tracks quickly and easily, while some just couldn’t seem to get in the groove. There is no accounting for taste, but there is accounting for Ease of Use…and if a kid isn’t into an album good like trying to get them to listen at home or in the car.
No durability concerns – we love CDs and downloads!
An album priced at under $13 is hard to call expensive…unless you are comparing it to an album prices under $10. Sadly, we don’t often buy albums for ourselves that are more than $10….so we prefer to keep our kids albums in the same ballpark.
If there is one thing Mr. Diddie Wah Diddie is not wanting for it’s Originality. Yes, if you have some history in the blues you know that the bulk of these songs are remakes…but Mr. Kaplan certainly puts his all-original twist on each song.
This was a tough conclusion for our team to come to simply because blues music seems to be so polarizing. The people on our team that love the style were absolutely blown away by Randy Kaplan’s incredible musical compositions and quality of song and voice. However, the people on our team that just didn’t dig the blues, well, just didn’t dig the blues. If you and your children like blues and are open to all styles of music, Mr. Diddie Wah Diddie is an excellent addition to your collection.
