Summertime Snack Attack

As temperatures rise and days get longer, most of us want to spend as much time as possible outside enjoying the warmth of the season.  With that we often trade in a real dinner for a quick snack or even ice cream and pretzels .

There’s no denying that everyone, at one time or another, has had a snack attack but for some reason we “give in” a bit more in the summertime.   It’s hard to resist cooling down with an ice cream cone in the summer heat!  For those striving to eat healthy or stick to a weight-loss regimen, snacking may prove challenging during the summer but I got you covered with some great summer snacks below.

Many convenient snack foods are highly processed and full of chemicals, additives, damaging fats and refined sugars.  So, when a snack attack hits you, try foods that are filling and satisfying, but also nutritious.  We get lucky in the summer time with the abundance of sweet fruits.  Remember it’s all about balance, so aim for wholefoods snacks first with a sprinkle of that occasional cone.

Here’s a good rule: Snack on things that don’t come in a plastic wrapper or a box.    

Try these wholefood snacks:

  • Make your own signature trail mix
  • Munch on some carrots and hummus
  • Blend yogurt and berries with agave nectar
  • Snack on celery and almond butter
  • Instead of potato chips make Kale Chips  

Or try these fruit desserts:

  • Grilled pineapple with rum and pecans
  • Grilled fruit kebabs dipped in a yogurt sauce
  • Frozen, dark, sweet cherries or grapes
  • Chocolate-covered frozen strawberries
  • Homemade sorbet – just blend frozen peaches, yogurt and ice

To alleviate snack attack guilt, try to understand why you are snacking and what snacks work best for your body. Perhaps you snack because your daily diet is missing nutrition, or because you are eating too little at meals. You might be snacking to soothe jangled nerves when you are emotional, or to entertain yourself when you are bored. Whatever your reason, acknowledge it and start thinking about how to create a life that is nourishing and truly satisfying.  This awareness is the key to healthy snacking.
