FlipOut™ – The Switching, Swapping and Swiping Card Game from Gamewright

Flip out for this colorful card game of back-to-back excitement! Switch, swap, and flip cards in order to get at least four-of-a-kind in a row. Sounds easy, but the cards in your hand are not necessarily your own! Every card is double-sided, so anyone can take and use any card in sight. Collect the most cards and, no matter how you look at it, you win!

Just when you thought you had played every type of card game, along comes this one that literally flips everything inside out! Between the double-sided cards, the clever varieties of actions, and the easy-to-learn rules, this game has a combination of elements that makes for hours of family fun. FlipOut, the game where there really are two sides to everything!

FlipOut is card game and like most card games there is a learning curve involved. The game is designed for kids ages 8 and up – so we are already looking at an age range towards the older end of kids and into tweens and teens area. Even with an older audience kids are going to need a practice game or two, and then they’ll be able to slowly work into standard game play. The goal of FlipOut is easy enough to understand – put cards into matching groups of 4, 5 or 6, play them, and build up as many cards as you can. The confusing part is that there are 6 different moves that you can choose from on each turn (Flip, Switch, Swap 1, Swap 2, Score, Swipe). The first thing kids will have to learn is what the moves are and how to properly execute them to help create matches. The next step is to consider strategy and work to win or block your opponents moves. All of this requires a good understanding of the game and some higher level thinking. FlipOut isn’t just a game you can pick up and master, you’ll have to play a few rounds to get the hang of it.

No durability concerns here. The game consists of card and card holders and it all stores well in a box. Kids in this age range shouldn’t have any trouble packaging and repackaging, and you shouldn’t worry about any missing pieces.

In an age of flashing lights, sounds and video games, a card game often finds itself on the low end of Visual Appeal. However, it seems that the folks from Gamewright actually spent some time thinking about the look of FlipOut, not just the game play, and came up with a super-fun, super-creative style all it’s own. The cards themselves have fun colors and designs in an almost retro style – so the cards do look pretty cool. Look, this is a card game, so it isn’t going to knock any player’s socks off, but for card game it’s not bad!

We played lots of rounds of FlipOut…more than we ever expected to be honest. And when that happens for people that play lots of games that definitely means that there is something to it. FlipOut is interesting, and it’s fun, and it plays different every time. That is all of the functionality you can ask for in a card game!

In our standard blind survey our team priced FlipOut between $15 and $20 – and that wasn’t without discussion. On one hand, some of the team felt it should be priced lower because after all it pretty much is a card game, and card games shouldn’t cost a lot. On the other hand, some of the team was quick to point out that you definitely need the card holders (included) to play, and without them the game would not play properly (which is entirely true). when you factor both of those details in, the team was comfortable sticking with 5 stars in this category with FlipOut’s $19.99 suggested retail price.

FlipOut is cool – and all original. New card games that play well are hard to come by – and we are happy when we get one. We have never played a card game quite like this!

We’re flipping out for FlipOut! That was too easy not to write – but we really did find FlipOut to be a fun, interesting, challenging and different kind of game to play. It isn’t easy at first, and if you are going to learn to play FlipOut and enjoy it, you are going to have to commit a few rounds to getting the moves down. But believe us – it is worth it! Once you have it all figured out FlipOut grabs you, and has you working at strategy and figuring out different ways to win! Durability isn’t an issue, and neither is cost. If you like strategy games and if you like card games you are going to like FlipOut!
