Faux•Cabulary is the outrageous game of wild new words! First, a crazy definition is read to the group. Next, players use the wacky word parts to create wildly funny new words to fit the definition. Each new word is read out loud, and the “Wordmeister” picks the best one! Faux•Cabulary—it’s where new words and lots of laughs come from!
Faux•Cabulary is one of those rare party games that is easy to set-up, easy to understand the rules and definitely easy to play! There is nothing worse than trying to teach a group (especially a large group) a bunch of rules for a game – it takes all of the fun out of it. With Faux•Cabulary all of the players need one quick practice round and you’ll be good to go. We love when a game works out like that!
Basically a card is pulled, then each player pulls three of the large “word” dice, and spins and rotates them to make a new word that fits (or somewhat fits!) the definition given on the card. It’s the mix of word prompts and creativity that sets the table for silliness and fun. Easy!
The box itself literally includes enough dice and cards for more than 300,000 word combinations (we didn’t count – we’re taking the manufacturer’s word on this one). The dice have the word parts printed on them directly (not on stickers) so they should last well over time. With proper care there is no cause for concern in this category!
The game of Faux•Cabulary has a nice look to it – it isn’t over the top with flashing lights and buzzers, but you can tell the company spent time developing a look. But like all of the best party games – the look of the game isn’t just relegated to it’s design. We like to include the “it” factor that draws people in to play – and this game has it. When a crowd plays Faux•Cabulary, expect that crowd to grow as the laughter gets louder and more people are drawn in.
So – we mentioned above the hundreds of thousands of word combinations. That does appear to be true. However, we found that Faux•Cabulary is lots of fun the first time through. After that, some of the words start to feel repetitive and a little used. Our recommendation – play it, laugh with it, then stash it away until your next party. Don’t take it out every time you want to play a game and Faux•Cabulary will stay fresh for you and your friends!
We like our games priced at $20 or less. With an actual retail price of $29.99 – Faux•Cabulary is on the high side. And as we mentioned, we don’t recommend it for every day play, making the cost seem that much higher.
We’ve played plenty of games where we are called upon to use letters to make words that we know (Boggle, Scrabble, etc.). But we’ve never played a game where we are called upon to use sequences of letters to make fun words that have never been uttered – and we loved it! Now that is taking the best part of some our favorite word-making games – and making it better!
Overall Faux•Cabulary is a really fun game to play with a group of friends. Older kids will enjoy the silliness and the creativity. And…parents may want to grab Faux•Cabulary out of the pantry for their next party – just make sure that no kids are around or you might find the word-making take on an adult nature! Faux•Cabulary is priced a bit higher than we would have liked, but it is well-made, and you should be able to get lots of play out of it! For the laughs, for the fun, and for the creativity – go for Faux•Cabulary!
